What are some common characteristics of the Lamiaceae family?
-Mostly known for its aromatic perennials and annual herbs
-Leaves: known for its opposite leaves and square stems, but occasionally whorled. Usually simple, rarely lobed or compound, and often fragrant when bruised.
-Flowers: Bilabiate, or containing two lips. Each bloom has 5 green sepals, partially fused into a tube, and 5 fused petals emerge from within. Typically 4 stamens (2 in sage and rosemary). Upper lip=2 lobes. Lower lip=3 lobes. Petals have no scent.
-Fruit: most= 4 dry, seedlike, “nutlets” which remain concealed within the sepal tube after the petals drop.
