2nd largest family among garden flower plants! (Asteraceae is first)
What are the Monardas good for?
-Hummingbird magnets!
-spotted beebalm make nice potpourris and tea
Why might Russian sage be such a popular garden plant?
It’s pretty and very aromatic

What is a semi-woody plant?
Lavandula spp. (lavender)
-bottom 2-3 inches of plants are woody and produce lignin, so it stays permanent in the landscape, unlike the herbaceous parts of the plant which dies back
What is the largest genus in the Lamiaceae family?
Is Bugleweed something you want to plant near your lawn? Why?
No! It is grown as a groundcover, but is persistent in the lawn, and very difficult to remove without just reseeding the lawn

-flowers = most distinguishing
-5 sepals (usually green) fused into a tube
-petals are bi-labiate tube (2 upper lips and 3 lower lips)
-inflorescence arranged in groups in the leaf axis (verticillasters or ‘false whorls’) or in terminal spikes
-square stems (other families have this too)
-opposite leaves perpendicular
