What are some characteristics of the Fabaceae family?
Flowers have “butterfly-like” blooms with 5 sepals that are usually partially fused into a tube and 5 petals with 3 structures: the banner (standard), 2 lateral wings, and a keel. also 10 stamens sometimes fused
Fruit is the legume itself! It is the most identifiable characteristic, often described as a pod. although there are sometimes other types of fruit
Leaves are typically alternately-arranged, compound leaves with leaflets in a pinnate (feather-like) arrangement but sometimes can be palmately arranged or divided into smaller leaflets. They usually have stipules (appendages at leaf base) that can appear leaflike or develop into spines. In climbing sweet peas, the terminal leaflet is replaced with a tendril. Many legume leaves fold up at night.
