Socio-Economic Challenges in Lagos
90% of new Jobs created are Informal - Low skill, Low pay.
Inequalities with pay leads to 2/3 of city living in slums like Makoko
Makoko, 75% of people live in 1 room, and only 11% have piped water.
55% use a pit latrine, dense population may lead to cholera. 33% pour wastewater into river.
High Crime Rate - Area Boys, 1 in 100 murder
Transport in Lagos - Challenges
40% of all new cars registered in Nigeria are in Lagos - But it is only 1% of the country in size
No public Transport prior to LAMATA - 75% of people spent 3 hours a day in congestion
Mass rural to urban migration (600k a year)
28 in 100000 is the fatal accident rate - 3x more than in europe
What did LAMATA establish?
Bus Rapid Transit System running from north to south of Lagos through city centre
Carries over 200k people daily, 1/4 of all commuters
‘Danfos’ Minibuses supplemented supply, designed to carry 15, often carry 20 or 30
Ineffective, air pollution has not decreased and is 5x over WHO recommended.
East to west train line due in 2016, carries 7x more than bus route
7 more lines, ineffective because long to build, demolishing slums.

Lack of rural based education leads to low pay agricultural jobs, unsustainable due to climate change
Niger delta is becoming increasingly polluted leading to civil unrest, Lagos seems safer

What were some problems holding Makoko back?
Authorities demolishing slums to develop area, forcing people to leave and build slums elsewhere
e.g. July 2012, 72 hours notice was given before destroying parts of Makoko slum.
School built in 2013, fully open in 2014. Destroyed in 2016.
Only held 60 children, wasn’t enough.
