What did the UK government do to improve roads?
In 2014 the UK government launched a £15 billion road improvement strategy for condition and capacity of UK roads.
What did the upgrade include regarding motorways?
Smart motorways were introduced, reducing congestion on a motorway by adding another lane on busy stretches.
What was added to motorways such as the A1
Many motorways received additional lanes, with a total of 1300miles of lanes added.
How was Paragraph One important?
Allowed less congestion so that commuting could be more efficient. This improved transport links via motorways.
P2: Rail Network improvements
London’s Crossrail improved the rail experience for commuters whilst simultaneously improving east-west connections across London. Furthermore, HS2 was construction of high-speed rail links that connected London to Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield.
How was Paragraph 2 Important?
Allowed commuters to be taken off motorways and roads which meant that shipping over motorways was more efficient and less congested. CO2 emissions lowered as more people take public transport.

Heathrow improvements
Additional lane proposed in 2016 to allow for more planes. This would reduce congestion and increase transportation capacity. This was controversial due to economic and environmental impacts.

Heathrow improvements 2008
In 2008 terminal 5 was introduced to heathrow airport so that they could accommodate 35mil more passengers. Furthermore a third runway has been proposed to allow 700 more planes however this was stopped due to ethical concerns. 725k people live under flight path, not environmentally or socially sustainable due to noise and air pollution.
