Landmarking
Correct landmarks applied to the body prior to
measurement are the key to accurate and
reliable anthropometric measurements.
General landmarking
– Mark on the right side
– Use a medium-tip pen
– Take care not to drag skin
– Recheck the mark
Common Landmarks
- Vertex – Acromiale – Radiale – Stylion – Dactylion – Iliocristale – Iliospinale (ASIS) – Trochanterion – Tibiale laterale
Acromiale landmarking
– most superior & lateral border of the acromion process
– Use your pen to identify the lateral border
– Palpate the superior aspect
– Mark & recheck
Radiale landmarking
– most proximal & lateral border of the head of the radius
– Subject’s forearm in mid-pronation
– Palpate the joint space
– Identify the proximo-lateral border
styloin landmarking
– most distal point on the styloid process of the radius
– Palpate the space between styloid & metacarpal 1
– Identify the most distal aspect
– Mark & recheck
Dactylion landmarking
– most distal aspect of the 3rd digit of the hand
– No need to mark, but watch out for those ‘talons
Illocirstale landmarking
– supero-lateral aspect of the iliac crest
• in the mid-axillary line
– Mark & recheck
iliospinal landmarking
– Most inferior & medial surface of the ASIS
– Palpate the inferior aspect of the ASIS
– Mark & recheck
Trochanterion landmarking
– most superior & lateral aspect of the greater trochanter of
the femur
– Use the palm of your hand to find the posterior aspect of GT
– Palpate around to the superior aspect using your thumb
Tibiale laterale landmarking
– most superior border of the tibial plateau
– Palpate the joint space from the lateral side, towards
the patella
– Identify the most superior aspect
Stretch stature
– Diurnal variation
– Subject to stand with heels together
– Back, buttock & heels to touch stadiometer
– Align head in the Frankfort plane
– Take a deep breath & hold
– Apply lift through the mastoid processes
– Recorder lowers headboard to crush hair
What is the Frankfort Plane?
– When the orbitale & tragion are horizontally
aligned, the vertex is most superior
Body Mass
– Diurnal variation – Subject in minimal clothing – Stand in the centre of the scale – Heels together, arms by sides – Looking forward not down
Sitting height
– Diurnal variation
– Subject sits on anthropometric box
– Thighs horizontal
– Back & buttock to touch stadiometer
– Align head in the Frankfort plane
– Take a deep breath & hold
– Apply lift through the mastoid processes
– Recorder lowers headboard to crush hair
– Subtract the height of the box
