How are Labour leaders elected?

A

. Candidates need the backing of 20% of all Labour MPs in order to challenge a sitting leader and 15% if their is no leader
. Each member of the party gets 1 vote when voting in a leadership election

A

. Traditionally Labour has received the majority of its income from trade unions. 94% of Labour Representation committee members were from trade unions.
. Money is also received from public donations

. Was formed to represent the working class in parliament

.Under Jame Callaghan (1976-79) Labour took the stance that public pay demands had to be restricted.
. Under Michael Foot Labour still favoured its traditional goal of wealth distribution.

A

. Candidates for election need to have been party members for at least 1 year
. Candidates for Westminster are chosen at the annual conference of NEC party members
. Candidates for the European Parliament are chosen using a closed regional list

A

. Policies are decided using local and regional policy discussions where members of insisted to discuss policy in their area and nationally.

A

. Historically Labour has been located on the left side of the political spectrum
. More recently Labour has been more centre left under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
. Under Jeramy Corbin Labour has been moved further left.
