MD who examines specimens of body tissue, fluids, and secretions to diagnose
what does a medical laboratory technician (CLT) do?
work under pathologist/MT. perform tests that don’t require advanced knowledge
ED: 2 yr degree
what does a medical lab assistant do?
perform tests under supervision under technologist/other person
ED: 1 yr training in hospital/ 2 yr college or vocational program
what does a phlebotomist do?
obtain & process blood specimen by venipuncture/fingersticks
ED: community college/vocational program/ on job training
what does epidemiology study?
diseases occurring in human populations (include contagious diseases & distribution, causative factors, & prevalence)
what is a epidemic?
outbreak of disease that affect large number of people in specific community/region
what is secretion analysis?
study of secretions through separations of liquid & solid portion of specimen using centrifugal force
what is clinical chemistry?
deals with analysis of serum portion of blood, urine, spinal fluids, etc
what is hematology?
study of components of formed (solid) elements of blood & blood-forming tissue
what is immunology?
study of how blood cells prevent disease caused by microorganisms
what is immuohematology?
specialized branch of immunology (studies & identifies blood group)
- uses 300 blood factors to cross match blood before transition
what are the lines of defense?

2nd: phagocytic cells of immune system

term for making incision/puncture into blood vessels to draw blood
