What is symbolic reactionism?
Suggests that an action depends on meaning, we give meaning based on interactions and the meaning we give something isn’t permanent.

What does labelling theory say about criminals?
People who are labelled as a criminal are more likely to align themselves with the criminal mentality and way of life.
At what age are humans influenced the most?
Adolescence.
Who creates what is deviant?
Those who are in power.
What does social reactivity theory suggest?
That we shouldn’t look at the original cause of crime but the ongoing issues.
What is the difference between classicism and labelling theory?
In classicism deviance leads to social control which leads to a reduction in crime. Whereas in labelling theory deviance leads to social control which leads to an increase in crime.

What is primary deviance?
Primary deviance is the initial criminal behaviour.
What is secondary deviance?
The criminal behaviour based on the label given form the first behaviour (primary deviance)
What is reintegrative shaming?
Reintegrative shaming discouraged criminality but allows the offender back into society.
What is disintegrative shaming?
Disallows a criminal back into the group by giving them a label, also degrades and devalues the individual.
What is a stigma?
A multifaceted disgrace, dishonour or shame that discredits an individual.
What is a self-fulfilling prophecy?
A prediction that directly causes itself to come true, whether it is negative or positive.
