That we can punish beyond reasonable means.
What is utilitarianism?
Doing the most amount of good for the largest number of people.

People do not act rationally.
What is a thesis statement?
A sentence that summarises an essays primary argument.
What should be included in an introduction? (5)
Thesis statement, background information, argument outline, address the essay question and key terms definitions.
What shouldn’t be included in an essay introduction? (4)
Detailed arguments, referenced from other sources, irrelevant information and the essay question.
What should be included in an essay conclusion? (5)
Restate arguments, outline your position, restate thesis, relate arguments back to main question and state the significance of your essay.
What should not be included in an essays conclusion? (4)
Any new information or ideas, don’t restate question, references and shallow or smart comments.
What were Beccaria’s three characteristics for a punishment to have a deterrent effect?
Severity, certainty and celerity.
What forms of punishment was Bentham critical of?
Capital and corporal punishment.
Define panopticon.
A building that allowed inmates to be watched without their knowing. Built by Jeremy Bentham.
Define bounded rationality.
The idea that we make rational deductions but only based on the information we have available, limited by time, cognitive ability and effort.
Define crime script.
A sequence of actions that make up an event. A criminal may test parts of the crime script to find flaws.
What are the main features of classical criminology?
Criminals have free-will and act rationally.
What is routine activity theory?
Changes in routine activities have created new opportunities for offending.
What is the difference between retributivism and utilitarianism?
Retributivism wants to serve a punishment equal to the crime and utilitarianism says that we can serve a punishment beyond reasonable means if it gets the job done.
What is ordinal proportionality?
Ranks offences in a hierarchy from worst to less worse.
What is cardinal proportionality?
Ranks crimes in an order of scale.
