What are some functions of CT?

A
  • Connect body parts
  • Support
  • Protection
  • Insulation

Q

What are the components of CT?

A
  1. Fibers:
    - Collagen
    - Reticular (Collagen Type III)
    - Elastin
  2. Cells:
    - Fibrocytes/fibroblasts
    - Adipose cells
    - Macrophages
    - Immunologic cells
  3. Ground substance:
    - Glycoproteins → fibronectin and laminin
    - Proteoglycans → dermatan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, keratan sulfate, and heparan sulfate

Q

What are glycoproteins?
What are proteoglycans?

A

Glycoproteins → oligosaccharides linked to proteins at the level of their side chains
(Less than in proteoglycans)

Proteoglycans → 1 core protein bound to multiple glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)
- GAG= repeating subunits of disaccharide units that are negatively charged (ex: hyaluronate) → many GAGs can form chains

Q

What are the different CT in the dermis?

A

Papillary layer:
- Adjacent (deep) to the epidermis (more apical than reticular)
Highly vascularized and innervated
- Collagen type I
→ Looser Irregular CT

Reticular layer:
- More fibrous than the papillary layer
- Collagen type I
→ Dense irregular CT
