Lab XIV Flashcards
How many nerves of facial expression are there?
23
What is responsible for soft closure of the eye?
palprebral part of the orbicularis oculi
orbicularis oculi
palpebral part: on the eyelid, soft closure
orbital part: around the eyelid, hard closure
innervation: CN VII
orbicularis oris
closes the lips
innervation: CN VII
buccinator
- keeps food in between teeth
- pulls the angle of the mouth posteriorly
- keeps cheeks away from teeth when chewing
depressor anguli oris
- depresses the angle of the mouth (frown)
- CN VII
zygomaticus major
- elevates the angle of the mouth (smile)
- CN VII
platysma
- elevates and wrinkles the skin of the anterolateral neck
- depresses the mandible
- broad and large like a platypus tail
- CN VII
What are the muscles of mastication?
- masseter muscle
- temporalis muscle
- medial pterygoid muscle
- lateral pterygoid muscle
What are the motor branches of the facial nerve?
a. temporal branches
b. zygomatic branches
c. buccal branches
d. mandibular branches
e. cervical branches
- Two zebras bit my coccyx
- all travel thru and arise from the parotid gland
What are the branches of CN V in the face?
a. supraorbital nerve (V1)
b. infraorbital nerve (V2)
c. mental nerve (V3)
parotid gland
- largest salivary gland
- superficial to lower part of masseter muscle
- innervated by parasympathetic CN IX
parotid duct
comes from the gland thru the buccinator muscle, opens in mouth opposite the upper second molar
lacrimal gland
lateral side of orbit
trapezius
o: occipital bone, the ligamentum nuchae, and the spinous processes of T01–T12
i: lateral third of the clavicle, as well as the acromion and scapular spine of the scapula
a: elevates, depresses, rotates, and retracts the scapula
n: CN XI
sternocleidomastoid
O: Sternal head-superior part of anterior surface of manubrium sterni
Clavicular head- superior surface of medial third of the clavicle
I: Lateral surface of mastoid process of the temporal bone, Lateral half of superior nuchal line of the occipital bone
A: Unilateral contraction: cervical spine: neck ipsilateral flexion, neck contralateral rotation
Bilateral contraction: atlantooccipital joint/ superior cervical spine: head/neck extension; Inferior cervical vertebrae: neck flexion; sternoclavicular joint: elevation of clavicle and manubrium of sternum
N: Accessory nerve (CN XI), branches of cervical plexus (C2-C3)
[accessory muscle of respiration]
omohyoid
O: scapula I: hyoid bone A: swallowing, coughing sneezing, Valsalva maneuver N: ansa cervicalis (C1-C3) -most superficial -2 bellies -strap muscle
thyrohyoid
O: hyoid I: thyroid cartilage A: swallowing, coughing sneezing, Valsalva maneuver N: ansa cervicalis (C1-C3) -strap muscle -deep
sternohyoid
O: hyoid bone I: manubrium A: swallowing, coughing sneezing, Valsalva maneuver N: ansa cervicalis (C1-C3) -strap muscle
sternothyroid
O: thyroid cartilage (lil butterfly) I: manubrium A: swallowing, coughing sneezing, Valsalva maneuver N: ansa cervicalis (C1-C3) -strap muscle
mylohyoid
suprahyoid muscle O: hyoid bone I: mandible A: elevates hyoid N: mandibular division of trigeminal (V3)
scalene muscles
anterior, middle, and posterior (middle and posterior often fused together)
O: transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae
I: 1st and 2nd ribs
A: tilt neck laterally or elevate ribs
N: cervical spinal nerves
-accessory muscles of respiration
-roots of the brachial plexus pass btwn anterior and middle scalene muscles to get to upper limb
what runs with the anterior scalene muscle?
-phrenic nerve, runs with internal jugular vein btwn subclavian vein and artery
what innervates all of the muscles of the larynx (except the cricothyroid)?
the recurrent laryngeal nerve
- wraps around arch of aorta on L
- wraps around subclavian a on R
