Lab quiz digestive Flashcards
litmus blue meaning
pH is above 8.3 and is basic
litmus red
pH is below pH 4.5
what type of fat is the main target of pancreatic lipase? what are the products of that digestion?
triglycerides are the target, fatty acids are the product
why does the digestion of fat lead to a more acidic solution?
Because it produces fatty acids that are acidic and can change pH levels
what is the function of bile salts? What effect does the presence of bile salts have on the activity of pancreatic lipase?
they coat lipids in order to mix oil/fats and water. It is an emulsifying agent and bile salts help mix pancreatic lipase. Bile salts are also an enzyme
what is starch? What is the product of its digestion by pancreatic amylase?
Starch is a complex carbohydrate simple sugars are the product.
What does the iodine test measure? How is this help us determine if pancreatic amylase has done what we expect it to?
It tests for the presence of starch and will test if there is still starch in the system
what does Benedicts test measure? how does this help us determine if pancreatic amylase has done what we expect it to do?
tests for the break down of simple sugars. This tests if there is no starch there should also be no sugar.
Why did we see a decrease in the digestion of starch in tube 4B?
because we added HCl
Why did we measure the pH in our four test tubes?
because a lower pH would indicate digestion
when iodine solution was added to the glucose what happened?
stayed the same
when iodine solution was added to the starch what happened?
it became more clear
when iodine solution was added to the maltose what happened?
same
How do you determine the percent of digested egg white
Length of egg white/ length of total tube
why did we incubate some capillary tubes in buffer solutions without enzymes?
to have a comparison and control factor
