digestive and reproductive ; Flashcards
Describe the hormones involved in the secretion of testosterone.
GnRH from the hypothalamus stimulates the secretion of LH and FSH from the ant. pit. LH stimulates lending cells to secrete androgens (testosterone), which stimulates spermatogenesis, inhibits GnRH, and stimulates primary and secondary characteristics.
What organ secretes estrogen and progesterone?
ovaries
What is the function of progesterone? During which phase of the menstrual cycle would its secretion be increased?
prepares the uterus for pregnancy during the second half of every menstrual cycle
What organ does progesterone act on?
the uterus
Describe the phases of the ovarian cycle and how long each one is (excellent short answer question).
1- follicular phase which is 14 days. Each ovum develops in its own fluid-filled bubble-like follicle. Follicle ruptures and releases the egg
after pooling the uterus
2- luteal phase 15-28 lasts just after ovulation until menstruation. Follicle ruptures and collapses and becomes a highly vascularized struggle corpus luteum. LH and FSH gradually decline from neg feedback
Describe the phases of the menstrual cycle and how long each one is.
1- proliferative phase 6-14
2- secretory phase- 15-26 creates ideal environment for embryonic development
3- premenstruation last 2 days beginning of endometrial degeneration
4- menstrual phase 1-5 defined as the vaginal discharge of blood fluid after pooling the uterus
What is the corpus luteum? What hormone stimulates its development?
highly vascularized structure LH stimulates it
What is the purpose of the secretory phase? Why would this phase occur after ovulation?
prepares the uterus for fertilization
Why does premenstruation begin?
last 2 days of the cycle
What hormones are important for the follicular and proliferative phases?
estrogen and progesterone
What hormones are important for the secretory and luteal phase?
progesterone and glycogen (LH)
What are the digestive enzymes found in saliva?
amylase, lipase, lysozyme
What is peristalsis?
a part of mechanical digestion which involves wave like movements to move food
