Lab Practical 1 Flashcards
Lateral Canthus
where two eyelids connect
Medial canthus
where two eyelids connect
Conjuctiva
mucous membrane covering the inner surface of the eyelid
Palpebral conjuctiva
covers inner surface of eyelids
Ocular conjuctiva
covers anterior surface of eye
Eyelid
lubricates and protects eye
Eyelashes
prevent foreign matter from reaching the surface of the eye
Palpebral fissure
gap that separates the free margins of the upper and lower eyelids
Fornix
where the palpebral conjuctiva meets with ocular conjuctiva
Lacrimal glands
produce tears for lubricant and protection
Tear ducts
deliver tears from gland to behind upper eyelid
Lacrimal caruncle
contains mucous producing glands
Lacrimal puncta
drains the lacrimal lake
Lacrimal canaliculi
connects the lacrimal puncta to the lacrimal sac
Nasolacrimal sac
connects lacrimal sac to nasal cavity via nasolacrimal canal
Iris
Dialation and constriction of pupil and regulates amount of light entering eye
Choroid
Contains numerous blood vessels and melanocytes
Suspensory ligament
Connects ciliary body to lens
Lens
refracts incoming light waves and focuses them onto the retina
Macula lutea
Sharpest images are produced when images are focused in this region
What is the anterior cavity?
From cornea to lens; contains aqueous humor
What is the posterior cavity?
From lens to retina; filled with vitreous humor
Eustachian tube
permits equalization of pressures on either side of tympanic membrane
Auditory ossicles
Collect and conduct vibrations of tympanic membrane and focus it on to oval window
Vestibule
Contains maculae; involved in static equilibrium
Semicircular canals
involved in dynamic equilibrium
Vestibulocochlear nerve
supplies the sensory cells of the labyrinth
Membranous labyrinth
houses the receptors for equilibrium and hearing
Utricle and saccule
sensation of gravity and linear acceleration
