Before patient contact
• When gloves are removed
• Before leaving the work area
Hands should always be
washed:
• At any time when they have been knowingly
contaminated
• Before going to designated break areas
• Before and after using bathroom facilities

Step 1:
Wet hands with warm
water.
Step 2:
Apply soap, preferably antimicrobial
Step 3:
Rub on palm to palm to form a lather, create
friction, and loosen debris.
Step 4:
Rub the back of both hands with fingers
interlaced.
Step 5:
Interlace the fingers and rub hands together.
Step 6:
Interlock the fingers and rub the back of the
fingers of both hands.
Step 7:
Rub thumb in a rotating manner followed by the
area between index finger and thumb for both
hands.
Step 8:
Rub clasped fingertips on palm for both hands in a
rotating manner, going forward and backward
directions
Step 9:
Rub wrist with the opposite hand in a rotating
manner and vice versa
Step 10:
Rinse hands with running water
Step 11:
Obtain a clean paper towel from a dispenser and
use it to dry hands.
