Lab 9 Flashcards
Retroperitoneal definition
Space behind the peritoneum
Fibrous capsule definition
The innermost capsule surrounding the kidneys
Perinephric fat definition
The second innermost layer of the kidneys; protects
Paranephric fat
4th layer of kidneys
Renal fascia
3rd layer
Nephron
functional units in the kidney, consisting of a glomerulus and its associated tubule, through which the glomerular filtrate passes before emerging as urine.
What is the purpose of urinalysis
Assess kidney function, test for uti, metabolic condition, provides general overview of health
filtration rate per minute
a measure of how much blood passes through the kidneys’ filtration units (glomeruli) per minute. typically between 90 and 120 milliliters or above per minute. Also called GFR
Minimum urine formation possible to remove all waste
500mL
Major components of urine
Urea, water, creatinine, uric acid, organic compounds, various electrolytes
Cortical nephron
a type of nephron whose renal corpuscle is located in the superficial renal cortex. make up about 85% of nephrons
Juxtamedullary nephron
a type of kidney nephron characterized by long loops of Henle that extend deep into the renal medulla. about 15%.
Peritubular capillary
a network of tiny blood vessels that surround the renal tubules. reabsorbing water, electrolytes, glucose, amino acids, and other substances from the filtrate (urine) back into the bloodstream. remove waste products from the filtrate, such as urea and creatinine.
