Lab 8 - Thermal and TENS Flashcards
What are 6 contraindications to check for before using thermotherapy?
What are 7 precautions for thermotherapy?
Method to apply to hot pack
- Assess sensation using hot/cold test tubes
- Describe procedure and feeling
- Wrap in 6-8 layers of toweling
- Apply for 5 minutes and check back in 5 minutes (watch for redness, blistering, rash)
- If no adverse reaction apply for 20 mins, but if adverse reaction apply ice
Method to apply paraffin wax and area most used for
Used only for hands and feet:
1. Assess sensation for hot/cold using test tubes
2. Explain procedure and feeling
3. Inspect area for cuts and remove jewellery
4. Have patient wash hands (sanitizer ok) and dry area thoroughly
5. If open cuts, cover with vaseline
6. Instruct patient to not move between layers because wax will crack
7. Slowly immerse in wax (palm or foot flat and down)
8. Remove from wax, let dry, and redo 6-8 times
9. Cover with plastic and wrap in towel with extremity above the heart
10. Leave for 15-20 minutes/ until cool
11. Peel wax off and use for hand exercises
12. Inspect area and document
What are 4 contraindications of cryotherapy
What are 4 precautions of cryotherapy?
Method to apply ice/icepack
- Explain procedure and feeling
- Assess sensation (hot/cold test tubes)
- Wrap ice in bag or use ice back
- Wrap in towel and apply
what are the 3 differences in vascular response between hot/cold
What are the 3 differences in cellular metabolism between hot/cold
What is the difference in inflammatory response between hot/cold
What are the 4 differences in neuromuscular responses between hot/cold
- decrease firing rate - muscle spindle
*increase firing rate - tendon organ with heat
What is the difference in collagen pliability between hot/cold
