Method to apply to hot pack

A
  1. Assess sensation using hot/cold test tubes
  2. Describe procedure and feeling
  3. Wrap in 6-8 layers of toweling
  4. Apply for 5 minutes and check back in 5 minutes (watch for redness, blistering, rash)
  5. If no adverse reaction apply for 20 mins, but if adverse reaction apply ice

Method to apply paraffin wax and area most used for

A

Used only for hands and feet:
1. Assess sensation for hot/cold using test tubes
2. Explain procedure and feeling
3. Inspect area for cuts and remove jewellery
4. Have patient wash hands (sanitizer ok) and dry area thoroughly
5. If open cuts, cover with vaseline
6. Instruct patient to not move between layers because wax will crack
7. Slowly immerse in wax (palm or foot flat and down)
8. Remove from wax, let dry, and redo 6-8 times
9. Cover with plastic and wrap in towel with extremity above the heart
10. Leave for 15-20 minutes/ until cool
11. Peel wax off and use for hand exercises
12. Inspect area and document

  1. Clear contraindications/consent
  2. Assess sensation using push-pin test
  3. Set machine and place electrodes on patient
  4. Turn machine on and ask patient to describe sensation and rate on scale (0=no sensation, 8= very strong verging on painful, 10 = unbearable pain)
  5. Bring to appropriate level
