Lab 8 spinal cord/ vertebrae/ brain functions Flashcards
premotor cortex
- prepares muscles for exact movements it will make
primary motor cortex
controls movement execution
somatosensory cortex
processes sensory input from body
frontal lobe
emotional regulation, planning, reasoning, problem solving
parietal lobe
sensory information integration (touch, temp, pressure, pain)
temporal lobe
sensory info integration (hearing, language recognition, memory formation)
occipital lobe
visual processing
body of vertebrae
protect spinal cord anteriorly
vertebral arch
protects spinal cord posteriorly
transverse process
muscle and ligament attachment point (laterally)
spinous process
muscle and ligament attachment point (posterior)
yellow ligament
preserve upright posture
posterior longitudinal ligament
prevent trunk hyperflexion
vertebral artery
provide blood supply to upper spinal cord, brainstem, and parts of the brain
gray matter
contains cell bodies, dendrites, and axon terminals
white matter
contains axons that connect gray matter
ventral root of cervical nerve and dorsal root of cervical nerve
- combine to form spinal nerve;
- sensory nerve fibers enter the spinal cord through the dorsal root while the motor nerves exit through the ventral root
spinal ganglion
sensory receptors that carry information to spinal cord
sympathetic trunk
allow nerve fibers to travel to spinal nerves
cerebellum
motor skills such as balance, coordination, and posture
