(DONE) Week 10 Lab Manual 19 Flashcards
Define: Maximum oxygen uptake/ VO2 max
measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can utilize during intense exercise
What are VO2 max measurements used for? (4)
- differentiate those people with high endurance ability from the norm
- evaluate the impact of different training procedures on endurance
- measure the metabolic costs of various work tasks under normal or alien conditions in order to develop more effective ways of working and eliminating fatigue
- diagnosing impaired cardiorespiratory function/ muscle metabolic diseases
What is the criteria for administering a maximum oxygen uptake test? (6)
- work should involve large muscle groups
- continuous work is performed at gradually increasing intensity
- the intensity of the work should exhaust the subject 7-10 min after warmup
- work rate must be measurable and reproducible
- test conditions must make the results comparable and repeatable
What is the criteria for reaching VO2max? (5)
- oxygen consumption ceases to increase linearly with rising work rate and approaches a plateau or drops slightly (last 2 values agree within + or - 125mL)
- blood lactate levels 8.0mM/liter or greater, 3-5 min after stoppage of exercise
- heart rate should be close to age predicted maximum (220-age)
- respiratory exchange ratio greater than 1.15
- subject is fatigued and unable to continue exercise (this is subjective)
What are the 2 different ways to measure VO2max?
- manual: gas expired during exercise is collected in meteorological balloons and sampled for O2 & CO2 content
- automated: inspired gas is directed through a pneumotachograph or a turbine device and expired gas is routed to a mixing box. A gas analyzer analyzes the expired gas for O2 & CO2 content and a computer controls the data collection and related calculations
List the equipment used in the VO2max test (15)
- weighing scale
- electrically braked bicycle ergometer
- heart rate monitor
- stopwatch
- low resistance respiratory valve plus mouthpiece
- noseclip
- collins non-kinkable hose
- electronic carbon dioxide analyzer
- electronic oxygen analyzer
- calibration gases for gas analyzer
- mercury barometer
- mouthpiece sterilizing solution
- meteorological balloons
- ventilation meter
- 2-way valve
How should the subject prepare for the VO2 max test?
- avoid climate extremes and exercise at least 24 hours before test
- subject should be well rested
- avoid alcohol, drugs, and cigarette smoking at least 2-4 hours before test
What is the minimum pedalling frequency for the VO2 max test?
- 80rpm
What is the purpose of the warm up period of the vO2 max test? (3)
- speed up the proper physiological adjustments of the subject to the actual test work
- familiarize the subject with the equipment and the type of work required
- familiarize students in class with their particular measurement task
When should you stop the VO2 max test?
- subject is unable or unwilling to proceed for any reason
- evidence of physiological de-compensations (angina, fatigue, dyspnea, faintness, nausea, leg cramps)
- signs suggestive of impeding emergency situation (pale and cold skin, cyanosis, mental confusion, shakiness)
define: angina
chest pain
define: dyspnea
difficulty breathing
define: claudication
severe leg cramps
define: cyanosis
blue lips/ nail beds
Why are subjects more likely to collapse during the recovery period than during maximal exercise?
- cardiac output is still high and cutaneous vessels are massively dilated BUT venous return declines as the contribution from skeletal muscle slows; So, deoxygenated blood is not being brought to the lungs fast enough to be reoxygenated and the subject may begin to feel faint
