A
assess upper body strength (essential in executing many everyday activities - lifting groceries, chores etc)

30 second arm curl procedure
A
- sitting in chair, back straight, feet flat
- place weight in dominant arm with elbow in full extension using a handshake grip
- test begins with arm perpendicular to the floor
- on “go” client turns palm up while curling their arm through full rom
- clinician sit next to chair placing fingers on clients mid-bicep to ensure full ROM
- as many reps in 30 sec
- arm more than halfway at the end of 30 sec, rep counts
- compare results to table

2 minute step in place purpose
A
used to assess aerobic endurance

2 minute step in place procedure
A
- determine min knee step height (midway between patella and iliac crest)
- practice test
- on “go” begin stepping
- inform client when there is one min and 30 sec remaining to help with pacing
- both knees must be raised to correct height but scoring is only on with the right knee
- stay close to client in case of balance loss

2 minute step test termination criteria
A
- 2 minutes have passed
- client cannot maintain knee height
- client asks to stop
- client can stop to rest and continue the stepping after a break if time remains but time does not stop during break
- client is allowed to place a hand on table or chair to assist balance

tug procedure
A
- begins with client sitting in chair (with arms) and is asked to walk 3 metres to a marker, turn around, walk back to the chair and sit down
- on the word go stand up, walk to the line on the floor, turn around and walk back
- record time
- greater than 12 seconds = bad (fall risk assessment)

- test begins in middle of chair
- demo task
- on “go” the client rises to a full stand and then returns to the initial seated position
- encourage the client to complete as many full stands as possible within 30 seconds
- instruct client to sit fully between each rep
- monitor performance throughout the test to ensure proper form
- record reps

- ask client to stand comfortably in bare feet with feet hip-width apart
- demo
- two movements are each scored out of 5 (subtract one point each time anything is used to help, subtract 0.5 for loss of balance)
