lab 5: sub max exercise testing Flashcards
1
Q
informed consent for submax test
A
client must understand that they are free to stop the test at any time and should inform you of all symptoms that they may feel/develop during testing
2
Q
procedure and measurements for the 6min walk test
A
- repeat testing should be at same time of day
- NO warm up
- client should sit in chair near start of test for 10mins
- take vital measurements
- rate baseline rpe
- use lap counter and timer for 6 mins and move to starting point
- walk as far as possible for 6 mins
- stand near the stating line during the test - do not walk w the client
- dont talk during the test
- post-test record the post-walk borg ad fatigue levels
- measure SpO2 heart rate and blood pressure
- record laps and additional distance covered
3
Q
sub-max cycle erg test procedure (astrand-rhyming)
A
- provide overview
- client should have comfortable clothes, hydrated, no alc+tobacco+caffeine within 3 hours, avoid strenuous exercise day of, good sleep
- explain borg
- should sit for 5 mins - then measure vitals
- adjust bike
- perform baseline measures on the bike (in posture of exercise)
- have them freewheel w/o resistance at 50rpm (maintain 50rpm throughout the test is essential)
- set first stage work output then start clock
- measure HR at each minute
- measure BP after 3 min
- 5th and 6th min HR is used to calc VO2 max as long as there is not more than a 6 beat difference
- cool down
- take recovery vitals
- calculate vo2 max using nomogram chart
4
Q
SSTWT procedure
A
- informed consent
- explain borg
- sit in chair for 5 mins to get resting vitals
- determine walking speed
- estimate clients age-predicted target HR and
- have client stand on the treadmill and attach safety device
- perform baseline measures in posture of exercise
- start the test
- measure vitals at end of 4 min warm up
- increase to 5% grade and maintain speed for 4 mins
- measure HR at the end of each minute used for VO2 max
- cool down at 0% grade
- 3 min active recovery vitals
- 3 minute passive recovery vitals
- determine predicted VO2 max
5
Q
general indications for terminating submax exercise test
A
- angina-like symptoms
- drop in SBP of >10
- excessive risk in BP
- shortness of breath, wheezing, leg cramps, claudication
- signs of perfusion (light head, confusion ect)
- failure of HR to increase
- change in heart rhythm
- SpO2 <80%
- client requesting to stop
- physical or verbal manifestations of severe fatigue
- failure of testing equipment
