Lab 7 Flashcards
what is epidermis?
made of epithelium cells that the layers closer to surface have keratin while outermost layer (stratum corneum) made of dead cells
what is dermis?
beneath epidermis and made of fibrous connective tissue & collagen
- made of blood vessels & sensory organs, sebaceous & sweat glands (made of epithelial tissue), hair follicles, muscles associated with hair follicles, and nerves
what are muscle tissue?
comprised of elongate, spindle-shaped cells
what are skeletal muscle?
called striated muscle, distinguished by striations/banding
what are smooth muscle?
lacks striations and is single-nucleated
what are cardiac muscle?
fibers are branched and connections b/w called intercalated disks (single-nucleated)
what are parts of bone?
periosteum (layer of connective tissue continuous with ligaments & tendons)
diaphysis (main shaft of bone & each end called epiphysis)
metaphysics (growth center/cartilage in children)
what are parts of bone cell?
compact bone (outer shell of bone)
osteocytes (individual bone cells) held within opening called lacuna
canaliculi (tiny channels connecting osteocytes
spongy bone (inside dense bone)
marrow cavity (red blood cell production)
what is axial and appendicular skeleton?
axial: skeleton along central axis of body (skull, vertebral column, and rib cage)
appendicular: everything else including limb
