Lab 4 - Protista Flashcards
Protista
all eukaryotes that are not fungi, plants, and animals.
Does not represent a monophyletic group.
Protists possess:
- membrane bound organelles
- membrane bound nuclei containing genome
- additional compartmentalization by internal membranes
Photoautotrophic
“Algae”
not mutually exclusive from heterotrophs
Heterotrophic
“Protozoans”
not mutually exclusive from phototrophs
- Flagella
a long cellular appendage(s) specialized for locomotion.
Known as flagellates.
Anterior pocket: place where one or two flagella emerge.
Mainly photoautotrophic(have chloroplasts) but can be mixotrophic or heterotrophic.
Mixotrophic
Survive as a photoautotroph or heterotroph
Heterotroph
eat or use others for energy.
Not self produced
Phagocytosis
Engulfing of prey for energy.
Cellular eating.
- Cillia
short hair-like structures specialized for locomotion
Known as ciliates.
Characterized by: submembranous system of microtubules that may coordinate the movement of thousands of cilia.
Heterotrophic.
- pseudopodia
cellular extensions of amoeboid cells used for moving and feeding.
Mostly heterotrophic.
rhizopods(amoeba) = root-like foot.
Move by extending one pseudopodium in a particular direction, anchoring the tip and streaming cytoplasm into the pseudopodium to prepare for the next move.
Plasmodium
Slime mold experiment.
simple organism that reacts to certain environmental stimuli.
on the plate is the main vegetative phase of the life cycle.
Paramecium parts:
- contractile vacuole
- food vacuole
- oral groove
- micronucleus
- cilia
