Lab 4 Genetics Flashcards
Incomplete dominance
What be allele is not dominant over the other
Dominant vs recessive trait
- Dominant: uppercase letter BB or Bb, expresses the dominant trait
- Recessive: Lowercase letters, expresses the recessive trait only when both recessive alleles are present. Ex bb
Homozygous vs heterozygous
- homo: 2 of the same allele
- hetero: 1 dominant and 1 recessive allele
Genotype vs Phenotype
- Genotypes: the allele for a trait, made up of 2 alleles
- phenotypes: how the trait is expresses, what you see appearance
F1 and F2 generation
- F1 generation is the offspring of the parents
- F2 is the offspring of the offspring
Pedigree: what symbol is male, female, who is related, how do you know what is offspring, affected, unaffected, and carrier
-male is square, circle, parallel line are mated, shaded is affected
Can a calico cat be male? Explain
Yes they would need an extra X chromosome
Male chromosome
XY
Female chromosome
XX
What blood type is the universal donor and why is it universal?
O negative and it has no antigens
What blood type is a universal recipient and why?
AB positive because it has both A and B antigens
What Rh type would a woman and her husband need to be considered at risk and need a rhogam injection? Why
I the woman is negative and their husband is positive
Determining someone’s blood type
If it clots they have it
Karyotypes: X, Y,
X is long ) Y is short ,
Child is born with an extra copy of their 21st chromosome
- Down syndrome
- trisomy
- karyotype: iii
