Lab 4: ANA Grade and Monocots 1 Flashcards
Nymphaea odorata perianth, stamen, pistil characteristics (Nymphaeaceae family)
Numerous perianth parts that are only weakly differentiated into sepals and petals, which also grade into stamens
Outer stamens petaloid, inner ones more clearly differentiated into anther and filament
Petal colour white, stamens yellow, sepals green –> grading
Radially symmetrical
1 pistil
Nymphaea odorata carpels and ovary characteristics (Nymphaeaceae family)
Carpels fused together into a compound ovary
Ovary superior (petals and sepals attached below the ovary)
10-25 carpels
carpels = # stigmatic surfaces = # of locules
Laminar placentation: ovules attached all around the locule
Usually grows a berry
Nuphar variegata (variegatum?) (Nymphaeaceae family)
6 perianth parts in the one I dissected
- the perianth parts are separate
- the flower includes two cycles of petal- or sepal-like structures
Petal colour yellow
Sepals are petaloid (tepals)
Some of the stamens are petaloid (13 or more)
Stigmatic surface (looks like mushroom)
The carpels are fused to one another
Ovary superior
Magnolia characteristics
Carpels separate as they mature
- spiral of carpels (scars of stamens)
Follicles, dispersed by animals who eat the fruit
Marginal placentation: placentae are found along only one margin of the fruits
Liriodendron tulipifera (Magnoliaceae family)
Petaloid sepals (tepals)
Many stamens (13 or more)
A spiral of separate carpels
- each carpel matures into a distinct samara with 2 ovules (one usually aborted)
Petal colour: yellow or green
Actinomorphic (radially symmetrical)
Superior ovary
the sepals resemble leaves in color and texture
What 4 families did we see that are a part of the Alismatales order?
Alismataceae, Potamogetonaceae, Araceae, Hydrocharitaceae
What genus of Potamogetonaceae did we observe in the lab?
Potamogeton
Potamogeton characteristics (Potamogetonaceae family)
Mostly submersed int he water with some leaves floating on the surface
Potamogeton strictifolius: Alternate or whorled leaves, very thin leaves, the leaf is not divided, rather the blade is made up of one segment
Potamogeton amplifoliu: larger leaves
What is a spadix, spathe, and spike?
Spike: general term for an inflorescence in which the flowers are directly attached to the stem (without a stalk or pedicel)
Spadix: spike in which the central axis (i.e. stem) is thickened
Spathe: large bract surrounding spadix
Is perianth present in species of Araceae?
A small perianth is usually present in species with perfect flowers
Completely absent in those with unisexual flowers
Arisaema triphyllum characteristics (Araceae family)
Green structures tipped with white: compound ovaries of the carpellate flower
Small whitish-purple structure: stamens of the staminate flower
Has spadix and spathe
Name 3 families in the Liliales order we saw in the lab
Liliaceae
Melanthiaceae
Colchicaceae
Trillium grandiflorum characteristics (Melanthiaceae family)
3-merous (3 petals, 3 sepals, distinct)
3 carpels
white flower
Thick rhizomes
6 stamens
What family is the Maianthemum canadense a part of ?
Asparagaceae family
What are three families that are a part of the Asparagales order?
Iridaceae, Orchidaceae, and Asparagaceae
