Lab 4 Flashcards
What is exercise 1
Calibrate aneroid manometer with mercury manometer
How is calibration performed
- Noting readings on device to be calibrated when device is measuring some standard quantity
- device should be calibrated across range of values which ones expects to measure
What is the scientific preferred unit of pressure
Kilopascals
What should the BP readings range from in this lab
50mmHg to 200 mmHg
Describe procedure for Ex 1
- Connect aneroid manometer to mercury manometer using Y-shaped tubing adaptor. Pump aneroid manometer to 200mmHg then read mercury manometer. Mercury manometer is the accurate reading. Record height in millimeters Hg of highest point on mercury column
- Listen to korotkoff sounds as cuff being deflated.
- When plot calibration graph, mercury manometer reading is dependent on what readings u set on aneroid manometer cause u set aneroid manometer first then read mercury manometer reading. On graphs, dependent variable (mercury manometer) plotted Y axis and independent (aneroid manometer) on X axis.
What is hysteresis
When instruments show slightly diff response as they are raised thru their range compared with being lowered thru their range
What is Ex 2 called
Practice sphygmomanometry
Procedure for practice sphygmomanometry
- Take turn measuring BP of other students in group. Each student needs to measure 2 diff subjects
- Subject needs to sit on chair
- Practice coordinating holding stethoscope, releasing pressure in cuff, listening, and watching gauge simultaneously
- Use double headed stethoscope so 2 people listen simultaneously. Listen “blind”
How to listen “blind”
Listener closes eyes while listening to stethoscope. Another student inflate and deflate cuff, saying “now” when deflate. Listener signals when hear 1st sound and last sound. 3rd person records pressure reading in cuff at each time listener signals.
What is Ex 3 called
Electronic blood pressure meter
Procedure for electronic BP meter
- Measure subject’s BP 2X using manual method, then 2X using electronic, oscillometric BP meter. Use same arm for all measurements
What is Ex 4 called
Cold Pressor Test
Procedure for Cold Pressor Test
- Place HR monitor chest strap on subject’s chest. Hold watch close to subject so can monitor changes in HR
- Have subject seated
- Measure resting BP manually using aneroid sphygmomanometer. Record resting HR from HR monitor watch.
- Subject immerse opposite hand from side which ur measuring BP in BASIN OF ICE WATER to depth WELL ABOVE WRIST
- Immerse for 60s. Then measure BP and HR while hand still immersed.
- Withdraw hand. Dry throughly and quickly with paper towels. Measure BP and HR as soon as hand out of water.
- Measure BP and HR again at 2 and 4 mins after hand removed from water
What is Ex 5
Isometric Exercise
Procedure for Ex 5
- Subject seated
- Place HR monitor chest strap on subjects chest.
- Measure BP from non dominant hand using AUTOMATED METHOD
- Use 14 lb dumbbell for males and 9 lb dumbbell for females on dominant arm
- Hold dumbbell ~3mins with hand supinated and elbow joint at right angle
- Record BP and HR at time 0, 1 min, 3 min
What is Ex 6
Dynamic Exercise
Procedure for Ex 6
- Measure BP during last min of exercise for each work rate
1. Place HR monitor chest strap on subjects chest
2. Subject sit on ergometer
3. Measure resting HR and BP
- Work rates are 40, 60, 80% of max O2 uptake. Generally females work periods 1-3 are 60, 90, 120 watts. Males work periods 1-3 are 90, 120, 150 watts
* Modify for very fit or unfit persons or small or large people - Pedal at 60 rev/min. Begin pedal then inc tension as they pedalling. Pedal for 3 min.
- Measure BP during third min of exercise using MANUAL METHOD.
- Resume pedalling, inc work rate. Repeat procedure for work period 2 and 3.
- Record HR during last 10 seconds of each work rate.
- After done last work period, reduce tension to 0.5-1kp, allow subject to pedal at whatever rate he feels comfortable for 2-3 mins. Minimizes possibility of fainting due to blood pooling to extremities.
