Cell division is split into what two events?
Mitosis and Cytokinesis
What is Mitosis?
The division of the copied DNA of the mother cell to two daughter chromids
Cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm.
Meiosis
Process that takes place with gametes (eggs and sperm)
Function of cell division
Increase the number of cells for growth and repair
Phases of mitosis
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase
Two stages of a cells life cycle
Interphase and cell division
Interphase
The long period to which a cell grows and carries out its normal activities
Why are skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle and mature neurons severely handicapped by injury?
They have almost completely lost the ability to go through cellular division
Ribosomes
Composed of RNA and protein. Sites of protein synthesis. Free floating or attached to rough er.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Membranous system of tubules. Rough (with ribosomes) and smooth (without).
Smooth ER
Site of steroid and lipid synthesis, lipid metabolism, and drug detoxification.
Rough ER
Area for storage and txp of proteins made on the ribosomes.
Golgi Apparatus
Packages proteins or other substances for export out of the cell or to the plasma membrane. Also packages lysosomal enzymes.
Suicide sacs
Lysosomes. Contain digestive enzymes (acid hydrolases). Digest worn out organelles and foreign invaders. If they rupture they can take out the entire cell.
