Microbiota
the group of organisms living in a given environmental niche.
Microbiome
refers to the collective genomes of organisms living in a given microbiota.
Colony
A small mass of genetically identical cells.
Lawn
A dense, even layer of bacteria on a plate.
Antibiotic
Substances that prevent or inhibit bacterial or fungal growth.
Zone of Inhibition
An area of clearing around a substance (eg. antibiotic), where sensitive organisms are unable to grow.
Resistant
The ability to actively avoid the actions of an antibiotic.
Sensitive
The inability to actively avoid the actions of an antibiotic.
Aseptic Technique (sterile technique)
Practices designed to prevent bacteria in the environment from contaminating your work, or bacteria in your work from contaminating the environment.
Virulent
Describes a pathogen against which an organism has little specific defence.
