Lab 2 Flashcards
Phospholipid bilayer
consists of two layers of phospholipids, with a hydrophobic, or water-hating, interior and a hydrophilic, or water-loving, exterior. The hydrophilic (polar) head group and hydrophobic tails (fatty acid chains) are depicted in the single phospholipid molecule.
Tonoplast
The membrane that surrounds the cell’s large central vacuole
Fluid mosaic model
various observations regarding the structure of functional cell membranes
-describes the cell membrane as a two-dimensional liquid that restricts the lateral diffusion of membrane component
Transmittance
Ratio of transmitted light to incident light
- expressed as %
Optical Density
a measure of the extent to which a substance transmits light or other electromagnetic radiation
Absorbance
Negative log of transmittance
- measured at a particular wavelength symbol (A)
Turbidity
Particles in suspension scatter light
Dilution (D) equation
D= volume of original solution/ (volume of original solution + volume of solvent)
Concentration of undiluted solution
Cu= Cd/ D
Standard Curve
Shows the relationship btw absorbance and concentration
Incident Light
Light striking the sample.
Transmitted Light
Light leaving the sample.
