Lab 20: Skin Flashcards
1
Q
Skin
A
- function: protection, body temperature regulation, vitamin D synthesis, and sensation to touch, pressure, pain, and temperature
- classified as an organ
- contains epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissue
2
Q
Integumentary System
A
- skin is part of this system
- hair, nails, two specialized glands, sweat, and sebaceous
3
Q
Epidermis
A
- top layer of the skin
- stratified squamous epithelium
- contains 5 zones or strata
- stratum corneum: uppermost layer composed of 25 or more layers of dead cells and a protein called keratin
- nails are a continuation of this layer
4
Q
Dermis
A
- middle layer of the skin
- composed of dense irregular connective tissue
- contains fibroblasts, adipose cells, macrophages, collagen, elastic and reticular fibers
- papillary layer: top layer; dermal papillae extend into the epidermis
- reticular layer: bottom layer
- ex: palms of the hands, soles of the feet, fingerprints
5
Q
Sweat Glands
A
- extend into the epidermis by means of a duct and end in a pore
- aid in excretion of wastes and regulate body temperature
- cubodial
6
Q
Sebaceous(oil) glands
A
- associated with hair follicles
- produce sebum: lipid rich substance that helps keep the hair follicles soft
- lubricates and protects the skin and reduces moisture loss
7
Q
Hair Follicles
A
- extend from the deeper regions of the dermis to the skin surface
- composed of keratinized cells
- arrector pili: smooth muslce cells that allow the hair to stand on end when the body gets cold
8
Q
Specialized Sensory Structures
A
- located in the dermis
- enable us to sense light touch (Meissners Corpuscles) and deep pressure (Pacinian Corpuscles)
- free nerve endings provide sensory input for pain, heat, and cold
9
Q
Hypodermis
A
- composed of loose connective tissue, collagen, elastic fibers, adipose tissue, and macrophages
- region of most of the body fat
