Lab 19 - Histology Flashcards
define histology
the study of tissues
what are the various purposes of tissues?
to cover or line, enable movement, or regulate body functions
what are tissues?
composed of one or more cell types that provide a common function
what are the 4 main tissue types?
epithelial connective muscular nervous
what is epithelial tissue?
tissues that form a layer of cells to line a body cavity or surface
what is connective tissue?
- usually composed of cells/fibers in a grounded substance - to join or insulate various body parts -support/protect body cavity -serve as means to transport substances
what is supportive connective tissue?
-a subtype of connective tissue -includes cartilage and bone
what is cartilage? give examples
a resilient tissue that provides flexible support and gives shape to structures like the ear, nose, and trachea
what is muscular tissue? (name the 3 types)
-associated with movement -smooth muscle (involuntary) -cardiac (involuntary) -skeletal (voluntary)

simple squamous epithelium
–thin and platelike
- ound in excratory ducts of many glands
- parts of kidney and testes
- lining of blood vessels

stratified squamous epithelium
-epidermis, mouth, esophagous, vagina, cornea, portion of urethra

cuboidal epithelium
- square or rectangular
- found in many glands
- free surface of ovary
- lining of kidney tubules

columnar epithelium
- tall and slender
- “columns”
- line surface of small/large intesine
- bronchi of lungs and uterus/oviducts

loose (areolar) connective tissue
- composed of cells, intercellular fibers, and ground substance
- forms superficial and deep fascia (tissue covering organs)
- structural support to blood vessels/nerves

dense (regular) connective tissue
- structural strength
- attached to bones, ligaments, palm of hand

adipose tissue
- fat cells
- nuclei are pushed to the side

blood cells
- lymphocytes/leukocytes (white blood cells)
- erythrocytes (red blood cells)
- platelets

hyaline cartilage
- lacunae (hole)
- chondrocytes (form spongy cartilage)
- found on end of ribs, tracheal rings, larynx, joint surfaces of bones

bone (compact)
- osteon or “haversian system” (5-20 lamellae)
- canaliculi (spindle fibers)
- osteocytes (bone forming cells) live inside lacunae holes
lamellae (circle pattern)

skeletal muscle
- voluntary
- nuclei (black dots)
- striations (thick red strips)

cardiac muscle
-involuntary

smooth muscle
- involuntary
- contractile portion of digestive tract walls
- found in respiratory passages
- in urinary and genital ducts

neuron (nerve cell)
-glial cells (smaller cells surrounding neuron)

tendon
- type of dense connective tissue
- made of collagen fibers/fibroblasts
