Lab 2 Flashcards
What is spectroscopy?
A technique that measures the amount of visible or UV light absorbed by molecules in a solution
What is the range of the visible spectrum?
400-700nm
What colour corresponds to short wavelengths?
Deep violet
What is the wavelength of deep violet?
400nm
What colour corresponds to long wavelengths?
Red
What is the wavelength of red?
700nm
What is the spectrometer measurement range?
325nm - 1000nm
Where does the infrared band sit?
To the right, longer wavelengths in comparison to visible light
Where does the ultraviolet band sit?
To the left, shorter wavelengths in comparison to visible light
What wavelengths do colourless solutions absorb?
Wavelengths outside of the visible spectrum
What is Beer’s law?
The concentration of a solution is linearly proportional to the absorbance of that solution
What is Lambert’s law?
The intensity of the transmitted light is linearly proportional to the path length
What is the formula for the log ratio of light?
Absorbance = log10 Incidence/transmitted
What is the Beer-Lambert law equation?
Absorbance = molar absorbance coefficient (E) x concentration (c) x path length (l)
What does a standard curve measure?
Absorbance vs concentration (Beers law)
