Lab 11 Flashcards
transformation
genetic change in cell due to intake of DNA from environment
transcription
DNA to mRNA
in nucleus
reads template strand to produce mRNA
RNA polymerase
template strand
read by RNA polymerase
3’ - 5’
coding strand
5’ - 3’
Translation
use mRNA to create amino acid sequence (polypeptide chains)
in cytoplasm at ribosomes
mRNA read one codon at a time
lab 11 (transformation)
E Coli with bla and gfp (B)
and without (A)
BLA
ampicillin resistance
GFP
green fluorescence from jellyfish; glows in the presence of arabinose (ara)
what is read to create mRNA
template strand
mRNA is a copy of the coding strand except T -> U because
RNA polymerase reads the template strand and creates a complementary strand (mRNA)
the coding strand is also complementary to the template (with T instead of U)
