Lab 1 Flashcards
Observation
Any information gathered through at least one of your senses
Inference
Assumption that is based on observations and past experiences
Hypotheses
Scientists use inferences that is grounded in observation to form tentative explanations
How are hypotheses tested
Experiments
Theory
Powerful explanation supported by multiple hypothesis and holds highest esteemed rank in lexicon of science
A hypothesis needs to have
Predictive power
Evidence is the product of
Interpretation of data
Six criteria
Consistency : the same when performed by other investigators
Observable: can be observed and explained by human senses and if not them controlled conditions to reproduce effect
Natural: natural cause used to explain why
Predictable: natural cause can be used to make predictions which can be tested
Testability: testable
Tentative: must be able to be revised and corrected
Reliability test
Data collected and interpreted by human - peer review
Correlational relationship from causational relationship observations from inferences
Measure of variation (standard deviation)
Supported with evidence and evidence has to be justified
Evidence justification
Is it appropriate to answer research question
Was data collected appropriately with precision
Have variables been measure for large enough sample
Is generalizability of the claim restricted to the sample population
Organisms must do what to stay alive
Maintain homeostasis or a stable internal environment despite changes
Sense and respond to stimuli
Obtain and use energy
Fight or flight nervous system response
Stressful stimuli activate nerve cells in hypothalamus which stimulates nerve cells in adrenal gland to signal release of adrenaline and norepinephrine
Short term response of fight or flight
Changes flow pattern
Increase in glucose in the blood Increase in blood pressure Breathing rate Heart rate Metabolic rate (prepare for action) To move blood where needed like brain for alterness and muscles for reaction
Central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
All nervous tissue is
Peripheral nervous system
