L9 Flashcards
What is a volume?
Discrete (individual) volumes/amounts
What is a capacity?
Functional combinations of volumes that show us our physical limits
What does not normally change in a given individual at a given time?
Capacities
How do you get a capacity?
Combine two or more volumes
What is the resting exploratory level (REL)?
The net result of the rib cage to expand and the lungs to collapse
What is the tidal volume (TV)?
Volume of air inhaled and exhaled in a single cycle (about 7% of TLC)
What is the inspiratory reserve volume (IRV)?
Amount of air inhaled beyond TV
What is the exploratory reserve volume (ERV)?
Amount of air forcibly exhaled following passive exhalation or REL
What is the residual volume (RV)?
Air remaining in lungs after a maximum exhalation (after TV and ERV)
What is the inspiratory capacity (IC)?
Maximum volume of air inhaled form REL (TV + IRV)
What is the vital capacity (VC)?
Maximum air exhaled after deepest inhalation (TV + IRV + ERV)
What is the functional residual capacity (FRC)?
Quantity of air in lungs at REL (ERV + RV)
What is the total lung capacity (TLC)?
Volume of air in lungs at end of maximum inhalation (IRV + ERV + RV + TV)
_______ can change easily (based on ____ or _________) but ________ can not easily change.
Volumes; take or circumstances; capacity
