Muscles of Inspiration Flashcards
1.
Subclavius
O: anteromedial surface of first rib
I: inferiolateral surface of clavicle
F: may raise first rib or pull clavicle downward
2.
Pectoralis Major
O: clavicles and eternal head
I: humerus
F: potentially elevates rib cage (class III, lousy leverage)
3.
Pectoralis Minor
O: anterior ends of ribs 2-5
I: coracoid process of scapula
F: raise sternum, lift upper ribs (when shoulder is fixed)
4.
Serratus Anterior
O: upper 8-9 ribs (near costal cartilages)
I: scapula
F: elevates ribs or draw scapula forward
5.
Costal Levators
O: transverse processes of C7-T11
I: rib immediately below
F: raise ribs
6.
Trapezius
O: base of the skull
I: T12 (12th thoracic vertebrae)
F: stabilizes upper torso, rotates scapula, raises shoulder, helps turn the head, assists in tilting the head backwards
7.
Diaphragm
O: eternal head, vertebral head, costal head
I: central tendon
F: contraction pulls the central tendon downward thus increasing vertical dimension of the thorax, increases volume and decrease pressure in thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity is pressed down thus fluid pressure in the abdomen increases
8.
External Intercostals
O: inferior border of rib above
I: superior border of rib below
F: draws ribs together, elevates rib cage, therefore increases thoracic cavity volume
9.
Latissimus Dorsi
O: spinous process between T7 and t12
I: iliac crest
F: compresses posterior aspect of the abdomen
10.
Scalenes
O: transverse process of cervical vertebrae
I: upper 2 ribs
F: raise first couple of ribs
11.
Serratus Posterior Superior
O: spinous process of C7-T3
I: ribs 2-5
F: elevates ribs
12.
Sternocleidomastoid
O: sternal head and clavicular head
I: mastoid process of temporal bone
F: upon bilateral contraction extends head or elevates sternum, upon unilateral contraction pulls shoulder and rotates chin to the opposite side, when head is fixed may raise the sternum and clavichord for inhalation
