Q

What are the types of layouts?

A

Fixed position: very high variety and very low volume; resource location analysis
functional layout: High variety and low volume; flow charts and relationship analysis
cell layout; low variety and high volume; product flow analysis

Q

What are the types of cell layouts based on the amount of indirect resources (AIR) and the proportion of transformed resources needed (PTRN)?

A

Specialized functional manufacturing: high AIR and low PTRN
small multi-machine manufacturing: low AIR and high PTRN
plant within a plant manufacturing: high AIR and high PTRN
complete component manufacturing: Low AIR and high PTRN

Q

What are the differences between shot and fat and long and thin?

A

short (number of stages) and fat (amount of work): high flexibility, high volume flexibility, high robustness, high ownership, low monotonous

long and thin: controlled flow, simple material handling, lower capital needed, high efficiency, high space utilization
