L4 - Design Flashcards
Chapter 4
What involves product and service innovation?
- Creativity
- Innovation
- Design
- Product and service
What type of curve does incremental and radical innovation have?
Incremental: S curve improvement in performance
Radical: many S curves
Types of innovation based on the Henderson and Clark model?
- Achitectual innovation: high architectural knowledge/ low component knowledge
- Radical innovation: High architectural knowledge/ high component knowledge
- Incremental innovation: Low architectural knowledge/ low component knowledge
- Modular innovetion: Low architectural knowledge/ High component knowledge
What is design in a product or service?
- A concept: understanding of the use, nature and value of the product
- A package: a group of products that provide the benefits of the concept
- A process: how the product or service are going to be produced and delivered
What are the stages of product and service design?
- Concept generation
- COncept screening
- Preliminary design
- Evaluation and improvement
- Prototyping and final design
What are the three types of evaluation and improvement?
- Quality function deployment: technique used to ensure that the final product meets the requirements of the client
- Value engineering: cost reduction in the product design
- Tagychu methods: design technique that uses design combinations to test the robustness of a design
What is the definition of feasibility?
Feasibility: the ability of an operation to produce a process, product or service
What is the definition of design funel?
a model that helps us to finalize the design
What is the definition of component structure?
diagram that shows the constitured parts of a product package and the order in which the components are assembeled
What is the definition of standardization?
the degree to which processes, products or services produce variety over time
What is the definition of commonality?
degree to which a range of products or services use the same components
What is the definition of modularization?
the use of standard sub-components
What is the definition of simultaneous (concurrent) engineering?
overlapping the stages in the design process
