L6 - Process design Flashcards
chapter 6
What is included in the design?
Supply netword
precess technologies
layout and flow
people, jobs, organizations, and facilities
product design
What is the nature and purpose of the design?
the decision we take during the design of a product can influence the decision we take when designing the processes
What is the difference between product and service design?
product design: overlapping activities between product and process design can be beneficial.
service design—it depends
What are the objectives of product design?
Quality, speed, cost, dependability, sustainability, and flexibility
What is a throughput rate?
number of products passing through the operation
What is a cycle time?
time between each item
What is a throughput time?
average time for one item to pass through the operation
What is utilization?
ration of the actual output of processes or facilities
What is process mapping?
processes in terms of how the activities within the process relate to each other
What is high-level process mapping?
broad picture of activities rather than detailed one
What are the process types in product production?
project, jobbing, batch, mass, continues
Project processing: very high variety and very low volume—custom products
Jobbing processing: high variety and low volume; small quantities production
Batch processing: low variety and high volume; standard products and repeated processes; can be one-offs; setups at each stage
Mass processing: lower variety and higher volume repeated processes, not setups
Continues processing: very low variety and very high volume: automated processes, repeated products
What is the combination of processes?
variety,volume…
variety, volume, labor, cost, equipment, ease of substitution
What are the types of service processes?
Professional service: high variety and low volume
Service shop: mid variety and mid volume
Mass service: low variety and low volume
What are the types of process tasks and process flow?
process tasks: complex or repeated
process flow: intermittant or continuous
