What is the WHO definition of oral health?
“Oral health is a state of being free from chronic mouth and facial pain, oral and throat cancer, oral sores, periodontal (gum) disease, tooth decay and tooth loss, and other diseases and disorders that affect the oral cavity. Risk factors for oral diseases include unhealthy diet, tobacco use, harmful alcohol use, and poor oral hygiene”
What are the most common dental problems?
Most common dental disease is periodontal disease
60-90 % of school children worldwide have dental cavities
Periodontal disease is found between 5-20% of middle aged adults
Caries is the most common disease affecting mankind
Periodontal disease affects supporting structures of the tooth
Tooth wear leads to destruction of hard tissue (in ways other than caries/ trauma such as abrasion/erosion)
40/50% of people who are HIV positive have oral/fungal/bacterial infections
Oral cancer affects 10/100000 in most countries

use a medium to soft brush with a small head and nylon bristles powered brushes (small oscillating head) may be effective but regardless of manual or powered its more important is that teeth are brushed twice a day
