L6 - Maternal Deprivation Theory Flashcards
What is deprivation and what are the effects of it?
Prolonged absence of the primary attachment figure, leading to long-term intellectual, social, and emotional difficulties
Maternal deprivation will have an impact if?
Separation occurs before 2 yrs old and no substitute primary caregiver is available to take over emotional care
The continuity hypothesis stages what?
Problems will affect adulthood and lead to inability to be a good parent due to a lack of an internal working model
How was Bowlby’s study done and what were the findings?
88 children studied
44 caught stealing, other 44 were control
14 were affectionless psychopaths, 12 of them experience frequent separations from their mothers compared to 3 of the 30 who weren’t affectionless psychopaths
Almost none of control group experienced this
What are affectionless psychopaths?
Individuals who lacked affection, as well as shame and responsibility for their actions
+ related to application
Knowing how separations affects children meant hospitals review practices and visiting hours so family can now visit
- related to retrospective
Was asking adolescent participants to recall childhood separations and memories may not be accurate
Negative evaluation
Didn’t state differences between privation (never having a primary attachment figure) and deprivation (having one and then having them taken away)
Don’t know which one causes negative effects found in research
