L10 - Lorenz Flashcards
Define imprinting
Instinct in animals to attach to the first moving they see after they’re born
How was the study conducted?
Clutch of gosling eggs divided into two
One division left with natural mother
Other out in incubator and saw Lorenz as the first moving thing
Who did the groups follow?
Natural mother group followed their mum
Incubator group followed Lorenz and didn’t recognise their natural mother
Lorenz found the critical period is important, what is it?
Definite period in a young animal’s life where if they’re not exposed to a moving object within this time, they’ll never imprint
How are attachment and imprinting similar?
Animal bonds with caregiver in a special relationship
Long-term effects?
Imprinting is irreversible and long-lasting
Sexual imprinting: mate with a similar kind of object they imprinted upon
Study that supports Lorenz (+)?
Chickens exposed to a rubber glove during feeding for first 2 weeks tried to mate with a rubber glove later in life - became imprinted
Same chicken study also found what (-)?
Chickens tried to mate with a rubber glove but once spent time with other chickens they showed normal sexual behaviour
Ethical issues (-)?
Being taken from mother may have been traumatising and it meant that goslings couldn’t learn normal behaviour
