What does a helping interview mean?
establishing relationship with pt to glean information we need from them to best help
recognizing patient needs of support/reassurance
Skills needed for a helping interview
give pt unconditional positive regard
active listening
assertiveness
non judgmental or blaming
practitioner has identified and dealt with biases and prejudices
artful phrasing
good timing of conversation
3 stages of the interview
initiation/state purpose
development/exploration
closure at predetermined time by interviewer
Key questions in the body of the interview
- reason for seeking care
- patient perception of the problem
- When did problem begin, and what were the consequences
- impact on patient life
- How does pt feel about it?
- Effect on work, relationships, quality of life?
- characteristics of the problem: location, where it started, quality, severity, alleviating and aggravating factors
- expectations of visit and future
Questions in an interview should be…
-open ended to start, then close to keep control of interaction
-mainly indirect
-without double meaning (clear)
- inviting pt to ask questions
