L3 Flashcards
This is why people having free time was so important for science.
They started to ask questions about why things happened and how it works.
These were the 4 components needed for science.
Free time, record keeping, standardized measurement system, mathematics.
This is the main reason the Greeks succeeded in science. (religion)
Separation of the divine from natural phenomena
In this city, everything came together at the right moment. (Science started)
Miletus in Ionia
This is the first philosopher that we know of. He rejected divine intervention and was famous for geometry.
Thales of Miletus

Parmenides of Elea

This person said that true knowledge cannot be gained through senses alone. He used the allegory of the cave. He also believed that spheres are of perfect form and has no impurities. He also created the first school, mainly for orgies.
Plato
This person was the first volcanologist. (Experimental Approach)
Empedocles
This person broke down components until they could not be broken down anymore, and came up with the theory of atom. (Experimental Approach)
Democritus

Created by Aristotle, this was used to create the perfect future citizens.
