Q

What happens when mother is RhD- and child RhD+?

A

RhD+ RBCs from fetus cross to maternal circulation. Anti-Rhesus are immune ABs, can cross placenta, coat RhD+ fetal RBC, can result in reticuloendothelial destruction of RBC by macrophages.

Q

How is hemolytic disease of newborn prevented?

A

Mother receives immunoporhylaxis w/ Anti-RhD at 30 weeks and after birth.
Anti-RhD ABs mop any RhD+ fetus cell in mother, so no immune response is generated.
