L19 Flashcards
How are plasma cells or memory B-cells formed
when native b-cells are activated upon antigen exposure.
Agglutination
reduces number of infection units to be dealt with
Opsonization
coating antigen with antibody enhances phagocytosis
Neutralization
blocks adhesion of bacteria and viruses to mucosa
Activation of complement
causes inflammation and cell lysis
Antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity
antibodies attached to target cell cause destruction by eoisinophils and NK cells
What are haptens
penicillin, urushiol, cocaine. sample (usually a protein) that contains polysaccharides, nucleic acids and even smaller molecules
What is the difference between polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies
POLY- natural immune reaction. several B-cells
MONO- single B-cells made immortal
How are monoclonal antibodies produced
the fusion of B-cells with cancerous B-cells to make them immortal to make hybridoma
