L15, Hand Notation Systems Flashcards
Objectives:
- To introduce common hand notation systems
- To consider strengths and weaknesses of each
- To discuss important elements of a coaches report
Take home messages (hand notation):
- Can be accurate, but some disadvantages
- Need agreed operational definitions of actions
- The more sophisticated the system, the longer the learning time
- Putting data into a meaningful form for coaches and players always a challenge for the analyst
- Works well with scatter diagrams and frequency tables but not as well with sequential applications
- Inexpensive, particularly if done live
What are scatter diagrams used for?
- Represent playing area, with notated actions where they took place (+ player)
Give an example of what a scatter diagram could be used for:
E.g., Where did our team lose the ball?
- Who lost the ball?
- What actions resulted in a lost ball? I.e., P- Pass, C-Cross, D-Dribble etc.
What are the 4 advantages of using a scatter diagram in notational analysis?
- Simple and quick
- Accurate with practice
- Can be done live
- Immediate feedback
What are the 3 disadvantages of using a scatter diagram in notational analysis?
- May require multiple sheets
- Time consuming to quantify
- No sequence
What are sequential notational systems?
- Symbols for each shot, no positions
- Shot sequences leads to an outcome: E.g., Winner (W) or error (O)
What are the 2 advantages of using a sequential notation system in notational analysis?
- More detailed
- Track actions leading to critical incidents
What are the 2 disadvantages of using a sequential notation system in notational analysis?
- Too complex for hand notation
- Analysis more difficult and time consuming
What is 1 way of adding to a scatter diagram system?
Incorporate time i.e., analysing different halves or quarters, using different sheets to add complexity to the analysis
What are frequency tables?
Simple count of frequency e.g., player number vs the chosen action
What are 4 advantages of using frequency tables for notational analysis?
- Simple and quick
- Accurate with practice
- Can be done live
- Immediate feedback
What are 4 disadvantages of using frequency tables for notational analysis?
- May require multiple sheets
- Time consuming to quantify
- No sequence
What is the main difference between a scatter diagram and a frequency table?
Scatter diagram shows field positioning, frequency tables are only interested in counting/numbers.
(2-way tables don’t allow for comparison between multiple variables)
