L15, Hand Notation Systems Flashcards

1
Q

Objectives:

  • To introduce common hand notation systems
  • To consider strengths and weaknesses of each
  • To discuss important elements of a coaches report
A

Take home messages (hand notation):

  • Can be accurate, but some disadvantages
  • Need agreed operational definitions of actions
  • The more sophisticated the system, the longer the learning time
  • Putting data into a meaningful form for coaches and players always a challenge for the analyst
  • Works well with scatter diagrams and frequency tables but not as well with sequential applications
  • Inexpensive, particularly if done live

Q

What are scatter diagrams used for?

A
  • Represent playing area, with notated actions where they took place (+ player)

Q

Give an example of what a scatter diagram could be used for:

A

E.g., Where did our team lose the ball?
- Who lost the ball?
- What actions resulted in a lost ball? I.e., P- Pass, C-Cross, D-Dribble etc.

Q

What are the 3 disadvantages of using a scatter diagram in notational analysis?

Q

What are sequential notational systems?

A
  • Symbols for each shot, no positions
  • Shot sequences leads to an outcome: E.g., Winner (W) or error (O)

Q

What are the 2 advantages of using a sequential notation system in notational analysis?

Q

What are the 2 disadvantages of using a sequential notation system in notational analysis?

A
  • Too complex for hand notation
  • Analysis more difficult and time consuming

Q

What is 1 way of adding to a scatter diagram system?

A

Incorporate time i.e., analysing different halves or quarters, using different sheets to add complexity to the analysis

Q

What are frequency tables?

A

Simple count of frequency e.g., player number vs the chosen action

Q

What is the main difference between a scatter diagram and a frequency table?

A

Scatter diagram shows field positioning, frequency tables are only interested in counting/numbers.

(2-way tables don’t allow for comparison between multiple variables)
