L12, Game Analysis Flashcards
1
Q
Objectives:
- To understand what performance analysis and its main sub-disciplines are (particularly game analysis)
- To understand the basic elements of notational analysis
A
2
Q
What is notational analysis?
A
An objective way of recording performance, so that critical events can be quantified consistently and reliably
3
Q
What is notational analysis useful for?
A
- Memory- Coaches recall events only slightly better than novices (observational training doesn’t help much)
- Bias- Selective, constructive memory confirms previous thoughts
4
Q
Why analyse player movements and actions?
A
- To objectively record game events
- to evaluate game strategy and tactics
- To discover new strategies
- To assess physiological demands of sport
- For entertainment (viewing and betting)
5
Q
What are the 4 core elements of notational analysis?
A
- Action
- Position
- Player
- Time
(Can consider ‘outcome’ as a 5th element)
6
Q
What is ‘action’ in notational analysis?
A
- What do you want to find out?
- Logic of game (causal relationship between actions and outcomes)
7
Q
What is ‘position’ in notational analysis?
A
- Divide playing area into coded cells
- Compromise between accuracy and significance
- More accurate when cells coincide with field markings
8
Q
What is ‘player’ in notational analysis?
A
- Each has a code, such as a shirt number or playing position
- Could be grouped by playing position
9
Q
What is ‘time’ in notational analysis?
A
- Difficult to do in-event
- Automatically coded in video-based packages
- Not all four elements in all systems
