What are basic elements to make you more likeable?
- Warmth: positive attitude, smile, be attentive, express emotions e.g people like to be around positive people inc cynics
- Competence: Socially skilled, intelligent and competent. Be less than perfect to not feel threatened
- Physical Attractiveness: either be, or be friends with someone pretty e.g halo effect
Describe a study looking at gender differences in romance:
- People go up to others in campus and ask a question
- Either date, going back to the flat, or sleeping with them
- Both genders said okay to a date
- Men significantly said yes to the sexual advances and most of them gave reasons if they said no
- Figures did not change for hypotheticals or for same gender interest.
What was evolutionary thought?
- Men spread their genetic material
- Women have to be choosier
- Reciprocity are powerful and complements are disarming as people cannot refute/reject them.
What study showed men's chat up lines?
- Difference in what is sold to men and what women are receptive to
- Asked women what they wanted to hear/ wanted to talk more to the men that said these things
- Asked for most/least preferred
- Women like more appropriate things, more positive and direct
- Not bad jokes, negative, insulting, or overly direct

- Humour shows positivity and being fun = elevates affect, shows intelligence
- Undergrad women rated humorous lines more favourable than undergrad men

- Love is a prerequisite for marriage in western societies recently, previously it was pragmatics

- Arousal overall: becomes like a withdrawal
